Codelco suspends Andes Norte mining project in Chile over deep seismic risk

Codelco has temporarily halted development and construction activities for the Andes Norte project at its Division El Teniente mine. The suspension follows technical analyses that identified an emerging deep‑seismicity phenomenon, which differs from historically managed seismic risks at the mine. The company said the measure prioritises the safety of personnel while further studies deepen understanding of the seismic behavior and strengthen monitoring, instrumentation and control measures. Ongoing seismic monitoring systems, safety protocols and preventive measures remain operational across all areas of the mine, and Codelco will coordinate with contractors to manage the pause in an orderly and responsible manner.
