Cody Drygeese elected to Yellowknife City Council

Cody Drygeese has become the top vote-getter in the Yellowknife city council election, marking what is believed to be the first time a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation has been elected to the council.

Drygeese secured 3,439 votes, making him the only candidate to surpass the 3,000-vote mark. His platform focused on reconciliation, advocating for Indigenous people, and fostering collaboration between the municipal government and relevant Indigenous governments, particularly regarding decisions affecting Dettah and Ndilo First Nations members.

With 13 years of experience in environmental science and engagement, Drygeese intends to work toward bringing back the city’s Indigenous relations advisor position and ensuring representation for the unhoused and all residents of Yellowknife.
