COFCO International to acquire two Brazilian sugar mills from Bunge

Bunge Global SA has agreed to sell two of its sugarcane mills in Brazil, Rio Vermelho and Nova Unialco, to COFCO International. The mills are located in the state of São Paulo and have a combined capacity to process 7 million tons of sugarcane.

This acquisition allows COFCO International to expand its presence in the Brazilian sugar and bioenergy sector. The deal is expected to increase COFCO’s sugarcane milling capacity in Brazil from 18.5 million to 25.5 million tons, positioning the company alongside major players like Raízen and BP Bioenergia. The transaction is estimated to add approximately 700,000 tons to COFCO’s total sugar production in Brazil.

The mills were previously owned by Viterra Limited and were integrated into Bunge’s portfolio following its merger with Viterra in July 2025. Bunge stated that the sale is part of a strategic effort to streamline its sugar and bioenergy assets and focus on its core business priorities. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
