Cofepris approves Lenacapavir for HIV prevention in Mexico

Mexico's Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has granted sanitary registration to Lenacapavir, a medication used for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The approval follows a scientific review of the drug's quality, safety, and efficacy.

Lenacapavir offers an innovative preventive approach through a simplified subcutaneous administration schedule, requiring only two injections per year. This long-acting method is designed to improve treatment continuity for those at risk of infection.

With this authorization, Mexico joins other nations, including the United States, Brazil, and several European Union members, in providing this medical tool. The decision aligns with 2025 recommendations from the World Health Organization regarding the use of biannual injectable lenacapavir as an additional PrEP option.
