Cofepris issues alert over counterfeit Saizen growth hormone

Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has issued an updated health alert regarding the counterfeiting of Saizen 20 mg (8 mg/mL), an injectable somatropin medication used to treat growth disorders in children and hormone deficiencies in adults.

The alert follows findings by Merck Biopharma Distribution, S. A. de C. V., the authorized importer and distributor, which identified several irregular batches. Specific counterfeit lot numbers include BA054637, which shows a modified expiration date and failed sterility tests; BA010812 and KW010374, which were not distributed by the company and failed sterility tests; and EC179361, which is not a valid batch released by the manufacturer.

Additionally, Cofepris noted international reports of counterfeit Saizen involving lot numbers BA088217 and AB003660. Authorities advise the public not to purchase or use the medication if it matches these lot numbers and warn against buying medicines from informal sources such as street markets or unverified online platforms.
