Coffee activates cellular receptor NR4A1 to protect against stress and aging

Researchers at Texas A&M University discovered that specific coffee compounds, including polyphenols such as caffeic acid, directly activate the nuclear receptor NR4A1. NR4A1 functions as a nutrient‑sensing transcription factor that regulates gene activity in response to cellular stress, tissue damage, inflammation and metabolic imbalance. Experimental data show that activation of NR4A1 reduces stress‑induced cellular damage, while loss of the receptor worsens injury. The findings provide a mechanistic link for the epidemiological association between regular coffee consumption and lower risks of age‑related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer and metabolic disorders. By identifying NR4A1 as a cellular switch modulated by coffee, the study offers a biological explanation for coffee’s reported health‑promoting effects and suggests potential therapeutic avenues targeting this pathway.

The research was published in the journal Nutrients and involved a multidisciplinary team from Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
