Coffee and Artichoke Extract Reduce Liver Disease Risk
Researchers found that regular coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver‑related death. Drinking two cups a day reduced cirrhosis risk by about 20 %, while five or more cups cut liver cancer risk by up to 47 % and liver‑related mortality by around 40 %.
A separate meta‑analysis of seven randomized trials involving 575 participants showed that supplementation with artichoke‑leaf extract significantly lowered liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST), markers of liver injury. The effect was observed in people with non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease, type‑2 diabetes, obesity or high cholesterol, suggesting a potential protective role for the antioxidant compounds in artichoke.
Both studies highlight dietary approaches that may support liver health, though experts note that further research is needed to confirm long‑term benefits and to define optimal consumption levels.
