Coffee and Functional Drinks Drive Health-focused Beverage Trend
Scientists have detailed how coffee influences the heart, brain, metabolism and gut microbiome, linking regular consumption to lower overall mortality (16% reduction) and reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, type‑2 diabetes, certain cancers and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The findings highlight coffee’s complex mix of roughly 2,000 antioxidants and its role as the world’s most widely used cognitive stimulant.
The global market for functional beverages—drinks that promise health or performance benefits—is estimated at about $160 billion. Younger consumers in the US, Brazil, Canada, Europe and the UK are driving demand for products enriched with protein, pre‑biotics, CBD, magnesium or adaptogens. Major brands are responding: Starbucks now sells protein‑infused coffee in North America and Europe; Danone acquired Huel, a protein‑drink maker, for roughly $1.15 billion; PepsiCo bought prebiotic soda brand Poppi for $2 billion; and Coca‑Cola launched its own prebiotic line, Simply Pop. These items command premium prices, reflecting their status as health‑oriented, convenience alternatives to traditional snacks.
