Coffee and tea can trigger morning bloating, health experts suggest alternatives

Nutritionists explain that coffee’s high acidity and caffeine can overstimulate stomach acid production and accelerate intestinal movement, leading to gas and a feeling of fullness when consumed on an empty stomach. Tea, especially black and green varieties, contains tannins that bind to proteins in the gut and can similarly irritate the lining, while added milk, cream or sugar may provoke lactose intolerance or feed gas‑producing bacteria.

To reduce these effects, experts advise eating a small snack before the first cup, choosing low‑acid or cold‑brew coffee, limiting tea steeping time, and substituting dairy with plant‑based milks. They also recommend alternative morning drinks that hydrate and supply nutrients, such as pineapple‑apple‑cider‑vinegar juice, green smoothies with spinach and berries, warm ginger‑turmeric tea with lemon, and carrot‑lemon juice. While these beverages can support digestion and immunity, they do not contain caffeine and therefore will not produce the same rapid alertness as coffee.
