Coffee brewing: Tips for selecting beans and grind sizes
Achieving the ideal coffee flavor depends on selecting the right bean types and mastering brewing techniques. Arabica is often regarded as the ‘queen of coffees’ due to its diverse flavor profiles, which can include notes of chocolate, caramel, citrus, or flowers depending on the roast level. In contrast, Robusta tends to be more bitter and earthy, providing a thicker crema often used in Italian-style blends.
Brewing methods require specific adjustments to grind size and bean selection. For espresso machines, a medium grind is a common starting point, with finer grinds used to increase intensity and coarser grinds to reduce bitterness. For traditional Moka pots, a medium-fine grind—resembling fine sand—is recommended to prevent excessive bitterness caused by over-extraction. Using a burr grinder is advised to ensure uniform particle size, which promotes consistent flavor extraction.
