Coffee brewing trends: Rising demand for espresso machines and grinders

The market for manual espresso machines is seeing an upward trend in Germany. According to the Tchibo Coffee Report 2026, while filter coffee and fully automatic machines still dominate, approximately 8 percent of Germans use portafilter machines. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, around 200,000 portafilter machines were sold in Germany, marking an increase over the previous year.

Modern semi-automatic machines are increasingly bridging the gap between professional barista craftsmanship and the convenience of fully automatic models by integrating features like built-in grinders and PID controllers. In recent testing of 15 models, the Sage the Oracle Dual Boiler was named the winner, noted for its integrated Baratza conical grinder and automated tamping system.

Complementary equipment, such as specialized coffee grinders, remains essential for different brewing methods. Models like the Starseeker E55 Pro offer high granularity with up to 100 grind settings suitable for everything from espresso to French press, while the Eureka Mignon Manuale provides micrometric adjustments specifically designed for precision espresso brewing.
