Coffee consumption effects on health and bone density

Recent scientific studies provide a nuanced view of how coffee and caffeine consumption affect various aspects of human health, including sleep, mental health, and bone density.

Research indicates that caffeine intake can impact sleep architecture, with 400 mg of caffeine potentially reducing sleep by up to 51 minutes. Regarding mental health, a study from Fudan University suggests a J-shaped relationship where consuming two to three cups of coffee daily is associated with the lowest risk of mental disorders, while consuming five or more cups may increase the risk of mood disorders.

The impact on bone health varies by demographic. A study from Seoul National University Hospital found that for postmenopausal women, consuming up to two cups of coffee daily could reduce the risk of osteoporosis by as much as 36 percent. However, excessive consumption—exceeding 330 mg of caffeine daily—may promote osteoporotic processes by increasing calcium excretion. Experts note that these risks can often be mitigated by ensuring adequate calcium intake.

Other findings highlight potential benefits for metabolic and cardiovascular health. Some data suggests that higher coffee consumption may be linked to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, though a causal link has not been established. Additionally, moderate consumption (up to four cups daily) has been associated with liver cell regeneration and cardiovascular protection.
