Coffee consumption: Health impacts of temperature and empty stomachs

Recent medical insights highlight both the potential benefits and risks associated with coffee consumption. Regarding digestion, nutritional medicine expert Matthias Riedl notes that drinking coffee on an empty stomach is generally manageable for most people, as the stomach produces a protective mucus layer. However, individuals with genetically sensitive gastric mucosa, smokers, and the elderly may experience discomfort such as heartburn or bloating if they consume coffee without food to act as a buffer.

In terms of long-term health risks, a study from the University of Oxford published in the International Journal of Cancer warns that beverage temperature is a critical factor. Consuming beverages at temperatures of 65 degrees Celsius or higher is linked to a significantly increased risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Specifically, those who regularly consume drinks at these temperatures face up to a 3.17-fold increased risk, a danger that rises further for those consuming six or more very hot drinks per day. This aligns with previous findings and warnings from the World Health Organization regarding high-temperature beverage consumption.
