Coffee consumption impacts: timing for alertness and gardening risks

Recent insights highlight how coffee consumption and its byproducts can impact both human health and gardening success.

Regarding human health, experts suggest that timing caffeine intake is crucial for maximizing alertness. Because cortisol levels naturally rise upon waking to regulate alertness, consuming coffee immediately after rising may be less effective. Waiting 60 to 90 minutes allows cortisol levels to moderate, potentially enhancing the caffeine's stimulating effects. Excessive consumption can lead to nervousness, rapid heartbeat, and sleep disturbances.

In gardening, using fresh coffee grounds as fertilizer can be detrimental to certain plants. The acidity of the grounds and the microbial processes during decomposition can temporarily bind nitrogen in the soil. Tomatoes, which prefer neutral or slightly alkaline soil, are particularly vulnerable; regular application of coffee grounds can lead to yellowing leaves, poor flowering, and underdeveloped fruit due to nitrogen deficiency.
