Coffee consumption linked to liver health and energy regulation
Scientific research and health experts are highlighting the complex effects of coffee on the human body. Studies involving approximately 355,000 participants from the UK Biobank suggest that regular coffee consumption is linked to a lower risk of liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver disease mortality. Experts note that the benefits are most pronounced in those drinking at least three to five cups daily, though positive effects are visible with two to three cups. These protective qualities may stem from caffeine, polyphenols, and chlorogenic acids, which help reduce inflammation and liver scarring.
Regarding energy, caffeine does not provide new energy but rather acts as a biochemical mask for fatigue. By binding to adenosine receptors in the brain, caffeine blocks adenosine from signaling tiredness. However, this can lead to a ‘caffeine crash’ once the effects wear off and accumulated adenosine floods the receptors.
For optimal health benefits, experts recommend consuming black coffee without added sugar, syrups, or heavy cream, as these additives can diminish the drink's positive impact. Additionally, methods like ‘cold brew’—which involves steeping coarse grounds in cold water for 8 to 24 hours—offer a smoother, less acidic flavor profile compared to traditional methods.
