Coffee consumption linked to slower biological ageing

Research suggests that coffee consumption may be linked to slower biological ageing processes. Studies indicate that coffee can be associated with telomere lengthening, which helps protect DNA as people age. Specifically, a study published in BMJ Mental Health found that drinking up to 3-4 cups of coffee daily may slow biological ageing in individuals with severe mental illness by lengthening telomeres. Additionally, researchers from King's College London found that coffee drinkers could have a lifespan equivalent to five extra years compared to non-drinkers.

The type of coffee consumed may also play a role; research in the journal NPJ Science of Food suggests filtered coffee is linked to lower biological age acceleration and longer telomeres, whereas instant coffee is associated with higher age acceleration.

Beyond internal health, coffee is also noted for its topical benefits. Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, coffee can help protect skin from oxidative stress. Caffeine may temporarily reduce skin puffiness, and finely ground coffee can serve as a body exfoliant to remove dead skin cells. In haircare, caffeine is being studied for its potential effects on hair follicles and the growth cycle.
