Coffee consumption: Psychological links and nutritional advice

Research and nutritional guidance offer varying perspectives on coffee consumption. A 2015 study by psychologists from the University of Innsbruck, published in the journal Appetite, identified a correlation between a preference for bitter tastes and certain dark personality traits, including Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and everyday sadism. The researchers suggested this link might stem from a general tolerance for unpleasant sensations rather than a direct causal relationship.

From a nutritional standpoint, expert Laure Hyvernat recommends consuming black coffee, such as espresso or ristretto, without sugar or milk to maximize polyphenol intake. She suggests the optimal time for consumption is between 10:30 and 11:00 AM, rather than on an empty stomach, to avoid irritating the digestive system or interfering with cortisol levels. Hyvernat also advises spacing coffee consumption at least two hours away from meals to prevent interference with nutrient absorption, particularly iron.
