Coffee consumption shifts and health insights in France

French coffee drinking is evolving. Consumers increasingly favor specialty beans, artisan roasts and traceable origins, while environmental labels such as organic and fair‑trade guide purchases. Slow‑brew methods are regaining popularity in homes and cafés.

Nutrition experts say the long‑standing belief that coffee causes dehydration is overstated. Regular drinkers who have two to three cups a day show no significant diuretic effect; only intakes above 400 mg caffeine (about four standard cups) may increase urine output, and vulnerable groups such as pregnant women or those with heart rhythm issues should monitor consumption.

A large UK‑based study involving 49,414 participants linked coffee preparation method to health outcomes. Filter‑brewed coffee was associated with a 16 % lower risk of all‑cause mortality and a 31 % reduction in cardiovascular deaths compared with other preparations, suggesting the way coffee is made can influence longevity.
