Coffee counts toward daily fluid intake, experts say
Health experts explain that coffee, composed largely of water, can be included in a person’s daily fluid intake. While caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, the water content in coffee generally compensates for it, especially for regular drinkers. Dr. Raj Dasgupta notes that a typical cup of coffee contributes to hydration and does not cause automatic dehydration. The recommended upper limit for caffeine is about 400 mg per day – roughly four cups – beyond which some individuals may experience increased fluid loss, nervousness, or sleep disturbances. Moderate coffee consumption is therefore safe for most adults, but people with hypertension, heart conditions, pregnancy, or sensitivity to caffeine should monitor their intake. Coffee should complement, not replace, plain water and other non‑caffeinated drinks in a balanced hydration plan.
