Coffee grounds research reveals potential for protecting nervous system cells
A joint research team from Korea University Guro Hospital and Kongju National University has discovered that nanomaterials derived from discarded coffee grounds can protect nervous system cells. The researchers developed ‘carbon dots’—nanoscale particles—from coffee grounds and compared them to those made from spinach.
The study found that carbon dots derived from coffee grounds exhibited significantly higher antioxidant effects than those from spinach, reaching an antioxidant activity level of 64.39%, which is close to the 69.15% observed in Vitamin C. When applied to human neural progenitor cells, the coffee-derived carbon dots reduced reactive oxygen species that cause cell damage and promoted the differentiation of these cells into astrocytes. Astrocytes play a critical role in protecting neurons and maintaining a stable environment in the brain and spinal cord.
Furthermore, the material demonstrated the ability to mitigate inflammatory responses and reduce the expression of genes related to neurotoxicity and oxidative stress. The findings, which suggest potential applications in neuroregeneration and the medical-bio field, have been published in the international scientific journal ‘ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces’.
