Global coffee industry marks International Coffee Day

October 1 marks International Coffee Day, a global observance established by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) to recognize the industry's value chain and the millions of families supported by coffee cultivation.

In Brazil, the coffee sector shows significant activity. Conab estimates that Minas Gerais alone will produce nearly 35 million bags of Arabica coffee, contributing to a national forecast of 48.2 million bags. Consumer trends in Brazil are shifting, with increased interest in premium products, coffee capsules, and cold beverages among younger demographics.

Regional highlights include Ecuador, where digital coffee purchases via PedidosYa grew by 40% in early 2026, and Mexico, where coffee production in states like Guerrero is finding synergy with the mining industry. In the Dominican Republic, production remains concentrated in mountainous regions using varieties like Typica and Caturra. Colombia is also noted for its increasing production volumes.

Health studies discussed during the celebrations suggest that moderate coffee consumption may be associated with reduced risks of certain diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's, though individual tolerance and sleep patterns should be considered, particularly for adults over 60.
