Coffee research reveals benefits for anxiety and sleep deprivation recovery
Recent scientific studies have highlighted various neurological and psychological benefits of coffee consumption and aroma.
A study from Showa Pharmaceutical University in Japan, published in the journal Nutrients, found that inhaling the aroma of freshly brewed coffee for five minutes can reduce negative emotions, anxiety, and stress in young adults. Using electroencephalograms, researchers observed increased relaxation indices linked to the connection between the olfactory system and brain regions associated with memory, though no significant changes in heart rate or energy levels were recorded.
Separately, researchers at the National University of Singapore published findings in Neuropsychopharmacology regarding the effects of caffeine on sleep deprivation. The study focused on the CA2 area of the hippocampus, which is responsible for social memory. Using laboratory models, the team demonstrated that caffeine can help repair synaptic communication damaged by sleep loss, allowing for the restoration of the ability to recognize familiar social cues.
