Coffee research reveals potential for biodiesel and health benefits
Recent scientific studies have highlighted diverse applications and health impacts of coffee. Researchers at the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain have developed a method to repurpose coffee grounds as a source of clean fuel. The study, published in Biomass and Bioenergy, demonstrates that coffee grounds contain approximately 15% lipids, which can be extracted to produce biodiesel. By processing grounds at 45 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes using n-hexane, scientists achieved a 90% oil recovery rate with high purity, offering a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional methods.
Separately, a study from the University of Oulu in Finland, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, examined the physiological effects of coffee consumption. Analyzing 2,264 participants with an average age of 46, researchers found that higher coffee consumption is linked to lower body fat, lower visceral fat, and greater skeletal muscle mass. The study also noted a correlation between coffee intake and sex hormones, particularly in men, where higher consumption was associated with increased levels of total and bioavailable testosterone. Additionally, coffee drinkers showed lower levels of branched-chain amino acids, which may relate to reduced insulin resistance risks.
