Coffee tourism in Peru and tips for maintaining bean freshness

Coffee tourism is a growing experience in Peru's Central Jungle, specifically in areas such as La Merced, Villa Rica, and Oxapampa. Travelers can visit plantations to observe shade-grown crops, learn about the harvesting and drying processes, and participate in professional tastings. In Villa Rica, the coffee benefits from a Denomination of Origin, highlighting its unique characteristics.

Regarding coffee quality and consumption, Starbucks global coffee developer Sergio Álvarez notes that once a bag of coffee is opened, its freshness lasts for a maximum of seven days. To preserve aroma and flavor, he recommends grinding only the amount needed immediately before brewing.

In Mexico, coffee consumption is widespread, with 97% of households purchasing the product. While Mexico is both a producer and consumer, annual per capita consumption is approximately 2.1 kilograms, compared to 4.2 kilograms in Colombia. In Mexican households, seven out of ten consumers opt for soluble coffee, while the remainder prefer roasted and ground varieties.
