Coffs Harbour adopts inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy
The City of Coffs Harbour has endorsed its first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy, a framework comprising 38 actions designed to recognize local cultural history and improve inclusivity. Developed in partnership with the Yandaarra Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the strategy aims to support the Gumbaynggirr people and other local Aboriginal communities.
Short-term objectives to be implemented within one to four years include the creation of a database of Gumbaynggirr and local Aboriginal names for use in naming streets, buildings, and landmarks. The plan also features a signage program to acknowledge Country on City assets and the inclusion of Acknowledgements of Country in all corporate email signatures.
Internal organizational changes are also prioritized, such as establishing a network of ‘Reconciliation Champions,’ improving onboarding processes for Aboriginal employees, and refining interview procedures to ensure applicants feel safe and supported. Mayor Nikki Williams described the strategy as a commitment to work in good faith and celebrate the resilience and knowledge of the region's Aboriginal population.
