COGBox project enables native PC play for Gears of War classics
The COGBox project, developed by Shagg88, allows Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment to run natively on PC. By statically recompiling the original Xbox 360 code, the initiative eliminates the need for heavy emulators.
Users must provide their own game files to run the titles through the platform. COGBox utilizes a custom Direct3D 12-based renderer designed to leverage modern hardware, offering features such as scalable resolution up to 5K, unlocked frame rates, and HDR10 support. It also includes compatibility with ultrawide monitors (21:9) and modern upscaling technologies like DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS.
Technical improvements include support for keyboard and mouse, modern gamepads, and the removal of motion blur. Specific adjustments were made for individual chapters, such as restoring split-screen support for the second game in the series. While not an official Microsoft release, the project provides a way to experience the franchise with contemporary graphics and performance standards.
