Cognitive health strategies for the elderly focus on critical thinking and reminiscence

Methods for maintaining cognitive health and brain activity in elderly populations are being highlighted through different psychological and behavioral approaches.

Japanese physician Hideki Wada suggests that mental agility in seniors is linked to the ability to process and apply knowledge rather than just accumulating it. He advocates for a habit of critical thinking, or “playing devil’s advocate,” to prevent cognitive stagnation. By questioning mainstream information and developing unique perspectives based on life experience, seniors can maintain a sharp and humorous intellect.

In a complementary approach to cognitive stimulation, the use of puppet shows or traditional storytelling is being utilized as a form of reminiscence therapy. By reenacting nostalgic scenes or classic tales, these activities aim to stimulate memories and emotions, which can lead to increased cognitive function and improved verbal communication among the elderly.
