Coimbatore police chase gutkha smugglers in dramatic 40-km pursuit

Tamil Nadu police conducted a dramatic pursuit of suspected gutkha smugglers in Coimbatore, resulting in the seizure of approximately 300 kg of banned tobacco products. The incident began during a routine vehicle check in Kovilpalayam, where officers intercepted a car suspected of transporting contraband from Bengaluru.

When officers attempted to inspect sacks in the vehicle, the three occupants allegedly pushed the personnel aside and sped away. In a daring move, Head Constable Velmurugan clung to the roof of the moving vehicle as the suspects drove through crowded areas and across toll plazas.

The chase lasted between 30 and 40 kilometers, involving coordination with police from neighboring Tirupur district and even ambulance personnel to surround the vehicle. The pursuit ended near the Thekkalur check-post in Avinashi. All three suspects, identified as Babu Dara, Rajesh, and Suresh—all natives of Rajasthan—were apprehended.
