Coimbatore police report rise in matrimonial fraud targeting men
Police in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, have reported a rise in matrimonial fraud targeting unmarried men over the age of 40. More than 50 complaints specifically related to these schemes have been filed, with 25 registered by Coimbatore Rural police and approximately 30 by the city cybercrime wing.
According to District Cybercrime Inspector K. Kavitha, the scammers typically use women to establish virtual relationships with victims through matrimonial websites and online messaging. After building trust over several months, the fraudsters persuade the victims to invest in specific opportunities. This method often results in both significant financial loss and emotional distress.
Investigators noted that scammers exploit personal details frequently shared on matrimonial platforms, such as age, income, and property ownership. In the Coimbatore Rural district, cybercrime cases have surged, with 118 cases registered in the first nine months of the year. Authorities have urged users to verify identities and avoid transferring funds or making investments based on online relationships.
