Coimbatore student death caused by retaliatory attack, says Minister
Tamil Nadu Law Minister C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar informed the State Assembly that the death of 19-year-old college student Amuthan in Coimbatore was the result of a retaliatory attack between student groups, rather than a drug-related incident.
According to preliminary police investigations, a dispute between second-year and fourth-year students occurred on August 9. In response, Amuthan and his companions allegedly confronted the fourth-year students at approximately 1:30 am on August 10, leading to further violence at Othakkal Mandapam. Later that morning, at around 8:30 am, the group that had been attacked confronted Amuthan and his friends, resulting in a severe assault. Amuthan was left near a friend's residence in Malumichampatti and was later found unconscious. He subsequently died after being admitted to a hospital.
Authorities have registered a case at the Chettipalayam Police Station, invoking the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
