Coimbra citizens petition to end dockless shared scooter and bike systems
Citizens in Coimbra have submitted a petition to the City Council and Municipal Assembly requesting an end to the operation of dockless shared scooters and bicycles within the municipality.
Promoters of the initiative clarify that they do not oppose soft mobility or the use of bicycles and scooters as transport. Instead, they target the current commercial model of dispersed parking. They argue that the lack of physical docking stations leads to vehicles being left on sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops, and accessibility ramps.
According to the petition, this irregular parking creates obstacles for pedestrians, particularly impacting the elderly, families with strollers, people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, and the visually impaired. The petitioners claim the current model suffers from structural failures, including insufficient user accountability and limited enforcement.
