Coimbra Health Unit Performs First Robotic Endoscopic Ear Surgery in Portugal

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of Coimbra carried out Portugal's inaugural robotic‑assisted endoscopic ear surgery. The procedure follows the centre's earlier milestone on 7 April, when it performed the country's first robotic cochlear‑implant operations. ULS officials highlighted that the hospital is now the only national centre capable of operating with every brand and model of cochlear‑implant electrode available in Portugal, demonstrating technical versatility.

President of the board, Francisco Maio Matos, said the achievement reflects the institution’s strategic focus on clinical innovation and research, while coordinator João Elói Moita noted preliminary data show high procedural safety, precise anatomical preservation and consistently improved surgical outcomes. The unit aims to cement its role as a national and international reference for highly specialised otological care.
