Coimbra implements new strategy to enhance nightlife safety
The Coimbra City Council has launched an integrated strategy titled ‘Noite de Coimbra: Saudável e Segura’ (Coimbra Night: Healthy and Safe) to manage the city's nightlife and enhance urban security. The initiative aims to balance the city's identity as a university hub with the need for resident tranquility and public safety.
Data from the PSP, GNR, and the Annual Internal Security Report indicate that Coimbra remains a safe city, with violent crime decreasing by more than 13% and street robberies falling by approximately 18%. Local authorities note that most nighttime incidents stem from alcohol consumption and noise rather than organized crime.
The new strategy involves cooperation between security forces, health authorities, emergency services, and local businesses. Key measures include increased inspections of commercial venues, conflict management training for private security teams, and promoting responsible alcohol consumption to prevent sales to minors or intoxicated individuals.
