Coimbra Metropolitan Region studies Metrobus expansion

The CIM – Região Metropolitana de Coimbra has unanimously approved a feasibility study to expand the Metrobus system to Figueira da Foz and Vila Nova de Poiares. The initiative includes starting the necessary contracting procedures for the project.

Nuno Neves, Mayor of Poiares, advocated for extending the service from the Lousã station, potentially creating a direct link between Vila Nova de Poiares and Coimbra. The expansion aims to support regional cohesion and improve access to the Poiares Industrial Zone, which provides over a thousand jobs, by offering an alternative to individual vehicle transport for work, health, and education.

Separately, in Figueira da Foz, construction of a new bridge over the Mondego River connecting Vila Verde and Alqueidão is expected to be completed by the end of November. The municipality has also awarded a contract for the requalification of a 2.8-kilometer agricultural road in Alqueidão to facilitate access to the bridge.
