Coimbra Municipal Assembly rejects student republic support proposals
The Coimbra Municipal Assembly has rejected proposals from the Livre and Bloco de Esquerda political parties aimed at increasing municipal support for student republics facing closure.
The Bloco de Esquerda proposal sought to revise the Municipal Regulation for the Protection of Entities of Historical Interest. This measure intended to create support mechanisms for students needing new housing or undergoing renovations, specifically citing the Marias do Loureiro and Baco republics, which face eviction by the University of Coimbra. The proposal also addressed the Pyn-Güyns republic, which is facing imminent eviction by a private landlord. The motion received 17 votes in favor, 15 abstentions, and 18 against.
A similar recommendation from Livre, which advocated for regular dialogue with student republics and a survey of their primary needs, was also defeated with 13 votes in favor, 18 abstentions, and 19 against.
