Coimbra student republics face potential eviction by University
The student republics Marias do Loureiro and Baco in Coimbra are facing potential eviction by the University of Coimbra, the owner of the properties located in Largo de São Salvador.
European Parliament member Catarina Martins has called for European Union intervention to find solutions that preserve these self-managed student housing projects. Martins described the republics as intangible cultural heritage and expressed concern that an eviction without a clear continuity plan could signal the end of the republic tradition in Coimbra.
She proposed seeking European financial support to fund necessary conservation works and ensure safe living conditions. Martins also noted that the situation could impact Coimbra’s status as a World Heritage site if the historical buildings and their cultural significance are not maintained.
