Students in Brazil and Portugal hold protests over education and funding
In Brazil, students from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in Niterói organized a protest following the first round of elections. The demonstration, which drew hundreds of participants, was motivated by concerns regarding the election results and potential impacts on university funding. Students expressed fear that shifts in administrative oversight could lead to budget cuts for infrastructure and student aid.
In Portugal, multiple student-led demonstrations have taken place. In Coimbra, over 200 students marched against government proposals to increase tuition fees, calling for better social support, more university housing, and more reliable student grants. Meanwhile, in Sintra, non-teaching staff protested at the local City Hall to demand an urgent increase in personnel. These workers highlighted a critical shortage of specialized technicians and health professionals needed to support students with specific educational needs.
