Coinbase adds derivatives, stablecoins and AI tools at System Update
Coinbase used its System Update event in New York to launch a suite of new products aimed at turning the exchange into an “Everything Exchange.” The rollout includes stock options slated for this summer, crypto options later in the year, and perpetual‑style stock indexes that trade 24/7 for U.S. users. The company also announced tokenized stocks backed 1:1, pre‑IPO perpetual contracts for companies such as SpaceX, Anthropic and OpenAI, and a stablecoin‑based payment system built around USDC.
In addition, Coinbase introduced the Coinbase Advisor, an SEC‑registered AI‑powered investment advisor, and opened its platform to AI agents that can trade on users’ behalf via tools like Claude or ChatGPT. New loan products let customers collateralize crypto assets, and AI tools for developers aim to automate trading strategies. These moves are intended to diversify revenue beyond volatile spot‑trading fees and attract institutional investors.
The announcements lifted Coinbase’s share price briefly to around $170 before settling near $168 after hours.
