Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Defends US Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Banking Criticism

Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong told Politico that rules governing elected officials’ crypto holdings are “complicated,” warning that overly strict limits could deter talent from public service while acknowledging ethical concerns. He highlighted Coinbase’s extensive political spending—more than $70 million—to support pro‑crypto candidates and legislation.

Armstrong also responded to JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon’s criticism of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (the CLARITY Act), calling the remarks “sad.” He defended the bill, which passed the Senate Banking Committee, saying it balances cryptocurrency industry needs with banking concerns. The legislation proposes stable‑coin disclosure rules, limits on rewards for idle crypto balances, and anti‑money‑laundering provisions, aiming to create a clear regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
