Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Says AI Agents Will Drive Crypto Adoption

Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong asserted that autonomous AI agents will soon process more daily transactions than all humans combined and that cryptocurrency provides the programmable financial infrastructure they need. He coined the term “Agentic Finance” (AiFi) to describe the integration of AI agents with crypto, emphasizing that crypto is a general‑purpose technology akin to electricity or the internet and will become essential for AI‑driven commerce.

Armstrong detailed Coinbase’s AiFi stack: the Base layer‑2 network, the USDC stablecoin, and the x402 payment protocol launched in May 2025. The x402 protocol revives the unused HTTP 402 status code to enable instant, low‑cost, machine‑to‑machine stablecoin payments. Chainalysis data show that x402‑enabled payments on Base have surpassed 100 million transactions within roughly nine months, with a 30‑day volume of about $24.24 million and May 2026 alone recording 3.1 million transactions worth $1.2 million.

Coinbase has also released “Coinbase for Agents,” a product that lets AI systems hold wallets, trade, and pay for services under developer‑defined limits. Armstrong rejected the industry slogan “If you’re in crypto, pivot to AI,” calling it zero‑sum scarcity thinking and arguing that AI’s rise actually increases crypto’s relevance.
