Coinbase crypto-collateralized loan balances reach $2.3 billion

Coinbase is seeing significant growth in its crypto-collateralized loan services, utilizing the Base Layer 2 network and the Morpho decentralized lending protocol. As of recent reports, the outstanding balance for these loans reached approximately $2.3 billion.

Users are increasingly utilizing assets like Bitcoin as collateral to borrow USD-pegged stablecoins, such as USDC, rather than selling their holdings. This allows investors to maintain their crypto positions while accessing liquidity. A major component of this activity involves cbBTC, a wrapped Bitcoin token issued by Coinbase, which enables Bitcoin to be used as collateral within the Base ecosystem on platforms like Morpho and Aave.

To provide more predictability for borrowers, Coinbase recently introduced fixed-rate loans through ‘Morpho Midnight’. While these services offer liquidity without asset liquidation, they carry risks, including interest obligations and the potential for collateral liquidation if asset prices drop significantly.
