Coinbase launches AI‑agent USDC payment system for businesses

Coinbase announced that its Business platform will now let corporate customers receive USDC payments directly from autonomous AI agents. The feature, rolled out on 23 July 2026, uses the x402 protocol – an open standard Coinbase introduced in May 2025 that embeds stable‑coin settlements in HTTP requests. Payments are settled on‑chain via Coinbase Payments, are instant, and cannot be reversed, removing charge‑back risk.

Developers can add the capability with a three‑line CDP x402 SDK, while new AI‑trading tools let users monitor order books, access live market data and trigger trades based on pre‑defined conditions. Coinbase cites a surge in agent traffic, noting that AI‑generated visits to its Base documentation pages recently outpaced human visits, underscoring the growing “agentic economy.” The rollout is positioned as a bridge between traditional commerce and machine‑to‑machine finance, offering businesses a turnkey checkout for automated shoppers.

Sid Coelho‑Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, described the update as delivering a familiar payment experience for a new class of customers – AI agents that act as buyers without human interaction.
