Coinbase launches AI trading agents platform
Coinbase has introduced "Coinbase for Agents," a platform that lets users connect large‑language‑model AI agents such as ChatGPT or Claude directly to their Coinbase accounts. The service enables AI‑driven crypto spot and derivatives trading, portfolio rebalancing, limit‑order placement, idle‑cash monitoring and automated payments, with future support planned for stocks, index funds, prediction markets and commodities. Users can set target allocations—for example 60 % Bitcoin, 20 % Ethereum, 20 % Solana—and the agent will execute trades within defined size and spending limits.
The platform is offered through a web‑based MCP interface and a command‑line CLI, and it operates with permissioned, isolated sub‑accounts that maintain AML and compliance monitoring. A regulated "Coinbase Advisor" agent provides SEC‑ and CFTC‑registered investment guidance. Following the announcement, Coinbase shares rose more than 3 % as investors responded to the AI‑focused expansion.
Coinbase describes the service as designed to support crypto assets, stocks, commodities, derivatives, payments and lending while operating around the clock, aiming to create a unified financial account that works 24/7.
