Jesse Pollak Steps Back from Base App, Shifts Coinbase's Base Strategy to Trading, Payments and AI

Coinbase executive Jesse Pollak announced that he is stepping away from leading the Base App after acknowledging that the network’s multi‑year bet on on‑chain social experiences failed to drive the expected crypto adoption. In a post on X, Pollak said the social products – including Farcaster, Zora, mini‑apps and creator coins – “disintegrated completely,” describing the first quarter of 2026 as “a punch in the face.” He is handing responsibility for the consumer application to Jordan Fish, known as “Cobie,” who joined Coinbase after its $375 million acquisition of the Echo fundraising platform. Pollak will refocus on the Base blockchain itself, positioning it as “the blockchain for global finance.” The new roadmap prioritises three pillars through 2026: trading of digital assets, stablecoin‑based payments, and AI‑driven financial agents. Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer‑2 launched in 2023, will move away from the earlier “everything‑app” vision toward infrastructure that supports tokenized assets, perpetual futures, prediction markets and enterprise payment services. The shift follows internal acknowledgments from Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong that the creator‑coin and social‑feed initiatives did not work, and comes as competition from other layer‑2 networks and fintech firms intensifies.
