Coinbase's Base Network Launches AI-driven MCP Tool for On-chain Payments

Coinbase announced the launch of Base MCP, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool that lets artificial‑intelligence agents such as Claude and Cursor perform on‑chain wallet actions on the Base Layer‑2 network. The MCP wraps APIs to enable AI‑driven trading, lending and micro‑transactions with stablecoins like USDC, extending the functionality of Base accounts across platforms.

The rollout is part of Coinbase’s broader push into agentic commerce, a niche market where AI agents conduct tiny value‑exchange transactions. Industry data show agent‑based payments total about $73 million annually, a fraction of the $14.5 trillion processed by traditional card networks, but the technology is attracting investment from major players including Stripe, Visa and Google.
