Colbún Reservoir begins preventive discharge due to high water levels
The Colbún company has initiated a preventive and gradual water discharge from the Colbún Reservoir as of 09:00 hours on Thursday, August 27. The measure is a response to the reservoir reaching 98% of its total capacity and upcoming weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall in the region.
The initial discharge flow is approximately 50 cubic meters per second, which represents a 20% increase over the current flow of the Maule River. The company stated that the discharge will be controlled to ensure that the total downstream flow remains equal to or less than the inflow to the infrastructure.
This action follows a Yellow Alert issued by SENAPRED on August 25 for the communes of San Clemente and Colbún. Authorities and the company have urged the community to avoid the banks of the Maule River, from the area below the dam to its mouth, while the operation is underway.
