Colbún says Angostura Gate Opening Is Controlled Operation

The Angostura hydroelectric plant in the Santa Bárbara–Quilaco area of Chile opened its gates to release excess water, a routine procedure during the winter season when river flow exceeds 700 m³/s. The company Colbún explained that the plant is a run‑of‑river facility without a reservoir, so gate openings are planned and coordinated with the Chilean Meteorological Directorate, the General Water Directorate and the National Emergency Prevention Service (SENAPRED).

Colbún’s sub‑manager Rodolfo Guardiola said the operation is normal and not an emergency, noting that downstream flow also depends on many tributaries. DPP Biobío delegate Juan Pablo Mellado urged the community to remain calm, confirming the maneuver had been pre‑announced and was carried out under established protocols.
