Rio de Janeiro braces for cold front with 3‑metre wave alert
A cold front moving across southeastern Brazil is triggering unstable weather in Rio de Janeiro and surrounding coastal areas. The Brazilian Navy issued a rescue‑service alert for a "ressaca" from 09:00 GMT on 13 July until 09:00 GMT on 14 July, warning that waves may reach 2.5‑3 metres along the city's shoreline. Municipal authorities advised residents and visitors to avoid swimming, water sports, fishing, navigation and cycling on the promenade, and to stay away from cliffs, mirantes and other exposed locations.
The front also brings rain showers, moderate to strong wind gusts and a drop in temperatures, with forecasts for 15‑30 °C in Rio and 11‑17 °C in São Paulo. Similar alerts were issued for nearby municipalities such as Maricá and the Baixada Santista region, where tidal heights up to 1.8‑1.9 metres and wave heights above 2 metres are expected. The weather service expects the situation to stabilize by mid‑week as a high‑pressure system returns.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions and have recommended securing loose objects, keeping doors and windows closed during strong winds, and calling emergency services (199) if rescue is needed.
