Severe storms and strong winds sweep Argentina on August 6

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued orange alerts for severe thunderstorms and strong wind gusts in Corrientes, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires on Thursday 6 August, and yellow alerts for strong winds in several other provinces, covering up to 11 provinces in total. The service warned that wind gusts could exceed 90 km/h, rainfall could total 30‑80 mm (with some areas receiving 50‑80 mm), and temperatures would drop to around 4‑6 °C after the cold front passes.

The storm system caused flooding, power outages and damage to infrastructure in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, La Plata, Mercedes, Necochea and other localities. Authorities advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors and follow civil‑protection guidance. A separate yellow snow alert was issued for the north‑west of Chubut, forecasting 10‑40 cm of snow accumulation.

Overall, the alerts aim to mitigate risks from intense rain, hail, electrical activity and strong winds as the cold front moves across central and eastern Argentina.
