Cold Front Sparks Storms, Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Argentina, Chile FAST-MOVING

A cold front moving across central Argentina on Thursday 6 August is expected to bring severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong wind gusts. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has issued orange alerts for Mercedes, Suipacha and La Plata, and yellow alerts for several districts in Entre Ríos, Santa Fe and Corrientes. Rainfall totals of 30‑70 mm are forecast for the Buenos Aires province, with wind gusts up to 90 km/h in parts of the region. The front will also affect Santa Fe, where gusts could exceed 80 km/h, and the coastal zones of Chile, where a marejada warning has been issued from the Gulf of Penas to Arica and the Juan Fernández archipelago. In the Coquimbo region of Chile, the storm damaged about 24 seafood‑selling stalls, leaving families without income. Authorities in both countries have advised securing loose objects, avoiding travel during the peak of the storms and taking precautions against the cold temperatures that will follow the front.

The SMN maintains alerts for thunderstorms and strong winds across the affected areas, and local civil protection agencies have urged residents to stay informed, secure property and limit outdoor activities until the system passes.
