Cold Lake receives energy investment and military training support

The Cold Lake region in Alberta is seeing significant developments in both its energy and defense sectors. The Canadian government has announced a $6 million repayable investment through Prairies Economic Development Canada to support Etthen Energy Corporation, a company wholly owned by the Cold Lake First Nations. This funding is intended to advance Indigenous-led heavy oil resource development, covering well site construction, facility development, and engineering work to boost community revenue and Indigenous participation in the energy sector.

In the aviation and defense sector, the Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Civil Engineer Squadron recently completed a deployment to Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake. During an annual exchange from August 15-29, 2026, U.S. Airmen worked alongside the Royal Canadian Air Force to complete various infrastructure projects. These tasks included facility renovations, electrical and plumbing work, and the conversion of a former school into a space for military family childcare. The exchange provided hands-on training for both nations' engineering and fire services.
